Cure for Nissan 350z Oil burn issue
Wednesday 24th June 2015
Hi All.
I'm looking for advice on a Nissan 350z.
It's an 05 plate with 70k miles on the clock. It's loosing about 1 liter of oil every 600 miles - no obvious sign of leakage, and therefore is likely to be burning it.
I've read on various 'other forums' (can one admit to that?) that there was a problem with the oil consumption on this engine.
So, the nub of the question is, what's the advice on a permanent cure. Is there a combination of modification work and preventative maintenance that will allow this engine to continue functioning at lowest cost?
You collective thoughts are most welcome.
Thanks

Regardless of what engine, if a car is burning oil then its gotta be worn piston ringland or a breather problem with the crankcase forcing oil into the combustion process
Check CCV and also get a compression and leakdown test done
ETA - if you are looking into buying it then don't - sounds like a wallet opener to me

Which version of the 350Z have you got?
It's only the VQ35DE 'rev-up' 300hp engine that has known oil consumption issues - several owners had them replaced under warranty. The 280hp version, which is probably what you've got in an '05 is pretty tough.

Its the rev-up engines that had the problem, i.e. the 296, that does sound excessive, the cure is a rebuild or replacement engine.
Mine has that engine, it hardly uses any between services. but it is still lowish mileage.

No cure other than engine rebuild which at that age is not worth it ( budget £1500 plus).
I had a 2004 350z that was an oil guzzler, no obvious signs and no blue smoke but the oil was being used.was fine as long as you keep topping up.
Oil additive will help short term eg molyslip/liquimoly/slick50.

I noted there were 2 different engine options for this car (280 & 300bhp) However the engine ID was the same - are they different engine designs? Surely the pistons and rings would be the same design?
Don't know that, just seeking information.

Agreed. Compression test will show if it's one knackered cylinder or a whole worn engine.350z Oil Catch Can Install
As regards the cause, worn valve guides are another possibility.

Don't know that, just seeking information. There were actually 3 engine options - later cars had the VQ35HR 313hp engine.

But back to what you asked, there were internal changes between the 280 & 300hp versions:
With the aim of raising the rev limit and boosting power, the major changes allow the engine to breath more freely thanks to a redesigned intake duct. Along with new pistons and a revised camshaft profile, the intake manifold has also been shortened and widened. The timing chain and oil pump have been redesigned and electronic exhaust valve timing control has been adopted.
A number of other components have been lightened and stiffened to reduce internal friction and to enable them to withstand higher engine speeds.
I don't recall that Nissan ever published what the cause of the excessive oil consumption was, but oval pistons or bores were one of the more plausible rumours. From memory, when an engine developed the oil consumption issue it occurred within 15,000 miles.

Thanks for the info - that's really helpful.
It turns out the engine is the 280 horse, and has not had a history of excessive oil consumption.
So I'm strongly suspecting the crank case breather ?
Agree about the compression test, thanks for the views.
I love this place, someone will always know an answer to just about everything.
